To generations of Mumbai newspaper readers, Mukesh Parpiani was a familiar name. First with the Daily, a defunct newspaper, then the Indian Express and finally with Mid-Day, Parpiani’s photographs appeared on the front page, chronicling all the major news events in the city and often more.

His photographs showed things that others missed – he had the ‘eye’.

“I like to chronicle the unusual,” he says.

After retirement, Mukesh joined the National Centre for Performing Arts, where he till today runs the Piramal Art Gallery, which showcases the works of young and upcoming photographers.

But his penchant for stepping out and capturing images that are quintessentially Mumbai has not gone.

At all times, he says, he never gives up on his humanity and sensitivity while looking for an image.

He recently showed his works spanning over 40 years starting in the 1970s at the Jehangir Art Gallery and they gave a glimpse of the sheer range of what he photographed over the decades.
